clariBI vs. Power BI: which fits your stack
Power BI is the natural choice for a Microsoft shop with someone who builds reports. clariBI suits teams whose data lives in apps like Stripe, HubSpot and Google Ads. Here is how to tell which one you are.
Power BI is Microsoft's business intelligence product. clariBI is a hosted BI tool that connects business apps, builds a dashboard for each one and answers questions in plain English. They overlap, but they are built for different kinds of companies, and the right choice usually comes down to where your data lives and who will build the reports.
The short version
- Pick Power BI if your company runs on Microsoft 365, much of your data sits in SQL Server, Excel, SharePoint, Dynamics or Azure, and someone on the team is willing to learn to build reports.
- Pick clariBI if your numbers live in SaaS tools such as Stripe, HubSpot, Google Analytics and Google Ads, nobody has time to build a data model, and you want to ask questions and get forecasts without authoring reports first.
What Power BI is
Power BI has a desktop authoring app, Power BI Desktop, where a report author connects sources, shapes the data with Power Query, defines measures in DAX and designs report pages. Reports are then published to the Power BI service for others to view. Licensing is per user, with capacity-based options for larger deployments. Microsoft also sells Power BI Embedded for putting reports inside your own application.
Its strengths are real:
- Microsoft fit. Excel, SharePoint, Dataverse, SQL Server and Azure sources connect with little friction, and many companies already have Microsoft licenses in place.
- Modelling depth. DAX handles complex calculations (time intelligence, custom allocations, many-table models) that a question box will not.
- Authoring control. A skilled author can lay out every pixel of a report.
- Ecosystem. Training material, consultants and hiring pools are large.
The cost is the learning curve. Power Query, the data model and DAX each take time, and a report is only as good as the person who built it. Connecting non-Microsoft SaaS tools often means a third-party connector or an extra data pipeline.
Power BI also has natural-language features (Q&A, and Copilot). Check which license your organization would need for them.
What clariBI is
clariBI is a web app. You connect sources and it does three things without a report author:
- Builds a dashboard for each source automatically once it finishes processing, on every plan including Free (for MCP apps, only where the vendor has been checked for it).
- Answers plain-English questions across your sources on the Trial, Starter and higher plans. The model plans the calculation, pandas code runs it on your data, and the model describes the result. Questions can combine sources by date or a shared column.
- Forecasts metrics with statistical methods chosen by backtesting, with 50%, 80% and 95% prediction bands, from Starter up.
The source list is aimed at the tools small companies use: 86 MCP apps including Stripe and HubSpot, 80 REST API connectors, Google Analytics, Google Ads, Search Console, Sheets and BigQuery, Meta Ads, Jira and Confluence, file uploads, and PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server and Oracle databases. Pricing is per organization rather than per user: Free ($0, 1 user), Lite ($19 a month, 1 user), Starter ($99, 3 users, 500 AI credits), Professional ($199, 15 users, 1,500 credits) and Enterprise ($999, 100 users, 5,000 credits). Details are on the pricing page.

The SQL Server question
clariBI can connect to SQL Server with a read-only login, but it copies tables on each sync rather than querying the server live. That is fine for operational tables of moderate size. For a large, carefully modeled SQL Server warehouse with many related tables, Power BI is the better tool, and it is not close. The database connection guide explains how clariBI's sync works.
Where Power BI is the better choice
- You need pixel-level control over report layout.
- Your analysts already know DAX, or you plan to hire someone who does.
- You want to embed analytics in your own product for your customers.
- Most of your data is already in Microsoft systems and your licenses cover Power BI.
Where clariBI fits better
- Your data is spread across SaaS tools and nobody wants to maintain a pipeline.
- Your team wants answers ("which campaign brought the most paying customers in May?") rather than a report-building project.
- You want forecasts with ranges without a data scientist.
- You would rather pay per organization than per viewer.
Neither tool imports the other's reports. Moving from Power BI to clariBI means connecting the same sources and letting clariBI generate dashboards; custom reports have to be rebuilt.
How to decide in a week
Take one question you answer every week. Build it in Power BI Desktop and time it.
